Balloon Kyphoplasty   Balloon Kyphoplasty involves making a small incision in the patient's back through which one or two balloon devices are inserted into the crushed vertebra. Once it is in position, the balloon which is filled with a radioopaque contrast liquid so it can be clearly visualised under X ray, is slowly inflated to restore some or all of the vertebra's original height. The balloon is then deflated and withdrawn. The cavity is then filled with bone cement to stabilise the fracture. This procedure is performed with sedation and a local anaesthetic. Pain relief is instant and the patient can be mobilised immediately.
Bariatric Support Group   This group is for all pre and post-operative Bariatric Surgery patients. These sessions have been set up to include all bariatric surgery patients, whether you have had surgery or are still awaiting surgery. It’s a chance to meet up and have an opportunity to talk to other people who have had surgery and discuss the challenges that weight loss surgery brings. For those that have had surgery, it is a chance to celebrate successes and a chance to support each other when things get tough. These sessions will take place on the last Monday of every month.
Bariatric Surgery   We fully understand at Ashford and St. Peter’s that taking the decision to have surgery, to help with weight loss, is a major decision. The clinical teams at our hospitals, located in Chertsey (Surrey) and Ashford (Middlesex), are dedicated to your healthcare and treatment.

All our facilities offer fresh bean to cup coffee, a range of fruit and herbal teas and freshly produced food.
Caldicott and Data Protection   For every patient visit to the hospital, as an inpatient or outpatient, data is stored on computer systems and added to medical records. This allows our clinicians and other medical staff to make informed decisions about each individual’s condition and treatment in respect to their healthcare history. It is vital to maintain the accuracy of this information as a record of their care if it is to be useful in the future. It is also essential that these records, both written and digital, are kept secure and access is restricted to specific staff members.

The biggest improvement has been at St Peter’s, where our new barrier system (in outpatients and Abbey Wing) has virtually eliminated the need to queue for spaces. This means we are no longer asking our patients to arrive early for their appointment in order to find a parking space, and everyone is telling us how much they value this significant improvement.

Chiropody   Podiatry services at Ashford and St.Peters Hospitals and in the community are provided by CSH Surrey. Further information regarding the Podiatry Service can be found here.
Chronic Pain Management   For some people, pain comes as a result of injury. In this case, the pain is relieved by medication and, when treated, goes away in the space of a few days or at most a few weeks. However, for some people pain persists after an injury has healed, or pain can be of unknown origin. It is often severe and can cause people to give up work and social activities. Chronic pain is not imaginary and can cause major disruption to people’s lives. However, help is available to teach people skills to manage their pain and improve the quality of their life. This help is available at Pain Management Programmes around the country. Your local out-patient programme is at St. Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey.

Counter Fraud   Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals Foundation Trust operates a zero tolerance policy towards all acts of fraud and corruption from staff and patients. Considerable amounts of money are lost to fraud within the NHS every year. In 2012 it was estimated that £158 million is lost to patient charges fraud alone, every year. This type of fraud is committed when patients falsely seek exemption from NHS charges or dishonestly claim entitlement to free services, and is just one of the ways in which a fraudster can victimise the Trust. The vast losses from fraud and corruption have a high impact on the quality of services the NHS can offer to patients, and persons using it.

Ultrasound   Ultrasound is a high frequency sound that you cannot hear, but it can be emitted and detected by special scanners.

Ultrasound waves are directed at your body using a small handheld sensor called a transducer. This is moved over the surface of the skin and generates sound waves. When the sound waves hit an object they bounce back as an echo. A computer converts the reflected ultrasound echoes into an image.

Abdominal Ultrasound exams do not use ionizing radiation (as used in x-rays). As ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they can show the structure and movement of the body's internal organs, as well as blood flowing through blood vessels.

Ultrasound imaging is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.
