South African Variant

You will have seen in the news that a number of cases of a new variant of Covid-19, known as the SARS-CoV-2 variant which originated in South Africa, have been identified in a small number of localities across England including the borough of Woking and Runnymede.

Public Health England swiftly mobilised a response to contain the new variant and restrict further transmission in these areas. Part of this response over the past couple of weeks was the deployment of targeted surge testing, where residents in the areas were contacted and then visited at home with a PCR test to complete - whether they were symptomatic or not.

A further surge testing programme will begin tomorrow (Thursday 18th February) in a new area of Woking Borough, in Maybury and surrounding areas as seen on the map below;

If you live in the area, please be assured that you will be contacted in due course. Surrey County Council have collated further information for residents on their website which includes a community helpline and helpful Q&A’s.

If you have further questions you can call the Surrey Community Helpline 0300 200 1008 Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, weekends 11am to 3pm. SMS: 0786 0053 465 for Deaf and hearing impaired residents only (Monday to Friday: 9am to 5pm).

As always the Trust is working closely with our national and local partners and our priority remains to keep patients, colleagues and our community, as safe as possible during this time. Thank you for your continued support.
