Rachel Arthurs

A student midwife at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (ASPH) has been shortlisted in two categories at the 2024 Student Nursing Times Awards.

Third year midwifery degree student, Rachel Arthurs (pictured above) has been shortlisted for Student Innovation in Practice and Student Midwife of the Year awards. The prestigious Student Nursing Times Awards brings together the nursing and midwifery community to shine a light on the brightest talent making their way into the professions.

Rachel has been shortlisted the Student Innovation in Practice award for her work developing a step-by-step guide about biomechanics for women and birthing people. Biomechanics is a tool that can help parents get their baby into the best position for birth and can be used antenatally and during labour.

The guide talks women and birthing people, and their partners through a range of positions that can help start active labour, encourage the baby to get into an optimal position and can relieve any pain or tension during labour.

Rachel has also been shortlisted in the Student Midwife of the Year category for the work she has done both in and outside of her course and placements at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals.

Rachel said: “When I look back over the past few years, I cannot believe how much I have achieved and I am so incredibly proud of the midwife I am becoming. I am so pleased to have been recognised for my efforts throughout my time as a student midwife and have thoroughly enjoyed my time and the varied experience I have gained whilst working in the maternity service at Ashford and St Peter’s.”

Toby Cooper, Director of Midwifery at ASPH, said: “We’re extremely proud of Rachel and would like to congratulate her for this recognition of her hard work and commitment to midwifery. We look forward to seeing the great things she will achieve in the future.”

The winners will be announced at a ceremony held at the JW Marriott Grovesnor House Hotel on Friday 26 April 2024.
